ACTION 4: speak to your local supermarket

Yesterday was  Wednesday 11th November: Global day for speaking to your local supermarkets & their customers, but you could still pursue this action to get the message across.

please remember not to call them around 11am today 11/11/2009 out of respect for our Remembrance

 

We would like to commend Sainsburys and also the Co Op for making the wonderful recent decision to stock Palestinian Olive Oil.

Waitrose SAY they believe in customer choice, but whenever people call to ask what Palestinian produce they stock, they refuse to give the customer ANY information, so we have to assume they don't stock any Palestinian goods at all.  They appear to support the Israeli Illegal Occupation of Palestinian West Bank and the Israeli Goods which are effectively "illegal" are in fact "stolen goods, produced on stolen land, irrigated with stolen water"

 

Yesterday was Wednesday 11th November  the day that Palestinian Solidarity groups across the globe are calling all people of conscience to telephone Waitrose & Morrisons to ask:

1  Do you stock ANY Palestinian products (such as Nablus Soaps or their super quality Pure Virgin Olive Oil)?

you might have to wait for an answer or you could ask them to call you back) - if not please ask WHY - if they say there is no demand, you could ask them just how many requests would they need before they consider there IS a demand?

2  I noticed you have herbs on your shelves marked West Bank - I know they come from Illegal Settlers Farms operating illegally on stolen Palestinian land.  Why are you stocking goods from such a dubious source?  When will you stop stocking them?  How many complaints will it take before you might consider you're losing a lot of business and your good reputation over this issue?

3  Why is your company still supporting the clearly illegal BRUTAL Occupation of the West Bank, where Israel has transferred civilian population  in contravention of the 4th Geneva Convention. .... you could always read some or all of Article 49 below - most relevant bit is in RED

Convention (IV) relative to the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War. Geneva, 12 August 1949.

Part III : Status and treatment of protected persons #Section III : Occupied territories
ARTICLE 49
Individual or mass forcible transfers, as well as deportations of protected persons from occupied territory to the territory of the Occupying Power or to that of any other country, occupied or not, are prohibited, regardless of their motive.


Nevertheless, the Occupying Power may undertake total or partial evacuation of a given area if the security of the population or imperative military reasons so demand. Such evacuations may not involve the displacement of protected persons outside the bounds of the occupied territory except when for material reasons it is impossible to avoid such displacement. Persons thus evacuated shall be transferred back to their homes as soon as hostilities in the area in question have ceased.


The Occupying Power undertaking such transfers or evacuations shall ensure, to the greatest practicable extent, that proper accommodation is provided to receive the protected persons, that the removals are effected in satisfactory conditions of hygiene, health, safety and nutrition, and that members of the same family are not separated.


The Protecting Power shall be informed of any transfers and evacuations as soon as they have taken place.
The Occupying Power shall not detain protected persons in an area particularly exposed to the dangers of war unless the security of the population or imperative military reasons so demand.
The Occupying Power shall not deport or transfer parts of its own civilian population into the territory it occupies.

I personally find such phone calling extremely difficult and stressful and I can feel overwhelmed with anger and sadness and also occasional lack of confidence as I talk to these people.  I find it difficult, but I make the effort and try to be as polite as I can whilst remaining firm and as calm as I can be - I try to remember that the person I'm speaking to is another human being who is just trying to do their job, but I try to get their agreement (when possible) to record my name and my concerns as an official complaint.  They will want to get off the hook by reading you their directors' crass statement - it's a good idea to let them do this and then proceed to ask a few questions (I just called them and was able to keep it going for 19 minutes!), if they don't know the answer then you could ask that someone looks into it and calls or emails you back.  Remember though if you are complaining to several branches, it's probably only worth giving your name once or twice, not to all of them!
