Ma'an News Agency (MNA) is a large wire service created in 2005[1] in the Palestinian Territories (West Bank and Gaza). It is part of the Ma'an Network, a non-governmental organisation media network created in 2002[2] in the Palestinian Territories among independent journalists throughout the West Bank and Gaza and including nine local television stations and nine local radio stations. Ma'an News Agency publishes news 24 hours a day in Arabic, Hebrew and English, and claims to be one of the largest wire services in the Palestinian Territories, with over three million visits per month.[1] Ma'an News Agency also publishes feature stories, analysis and opinion articles. The agency's headquarters are in Bethlehem and Gaza City. Ma'an News Agency describes itself as currently being the leading source of independent news from the West Bank, Gaza, East Jerusalem and Israel, and "the first choice for online information" about Palestine.[1] According to a recent study, approximately 95.6 percent of Palestinians with internet access "frequently visit" the site.[5] Only high-profile sites Google, Yahoo, MSN, Windows Live and YouTube receive more Palestinian visitors.[6] |

MDM |
Media Monitors Network (MMN) is NOT just 'another' news web-site or magazine but a non-profit, non-bias and non-political platform which mainly helps to prevail the whole truth and generally facilitate answers to any disputed, controversial topic being broadcast, web cast, published, distributed or telecast in the world media. MMN is seeking for the truth in most critical "hot topics" which can often be twisted by the world media.
MMN was established in California, USA, in October 2000 and is destined to become a major platform for serious media contributors and observers from around the globe. MMN is not sponsored by anyone influential and does this intentionally so that we will not be 'forced' into one opinion or another. Journalists, editors, writers, photographers, human rights activists, webmasters, poets, columnists, reporters, researchers, analysts, observers, columnists, content providers, media contributors, observers, social scientists and other professionals from around the globe are invited to join Media Monitors Network (MMN) to counter information warfare and fabricated propaganda in the world media and to promote the whole truth, fairness and accuracy in news reporting. MMN is honored to be supported voluntarily by media contributors such as yourself and has received contributions and/or permissions from many reputable web-sites, editors, newspapers, web-masters to publish their hard earned and quality content on MMN web-site. Media Monitors Network is destined to become a voluntary movement which will use all channels of communication and all other sources to pursue its mission. Media Monitors Network would like to expose the truth about black sheeps, propagandists, or crooks disguised as 'journalists' in the noble profession of journalism, who are paid or backed by intelligence agencies, political parties, politicians, bureaucrats, the Official Mafia, or the Disinformation Mafia. Media Monitors Network would like to set the record straight on important issues that have received slanted press coverage. It will encourage the Press to report the news fairly, accurately and objectively without resorting to bias or partisanship. Media Monitors Network says accountability of the Press is necessary to reduce corruption, fraud and disinformation in many news media organizations. Many journalists and writers don't always get their stories right and many of them don't even seem to care. By advising them of their responsibility to the public, whom they claim to serve, Media Monitors Network will help to hold those members of the news media accountable for their misdeeds who write and publish unfair, biased, inaccurate, or cooked up news reports to serve their masters and their political, religious, business, or personal interests. The power of the Press has inspired an arrogance which leads many in the news media to believe they should be insulated from criticism. Media Monitors Network believes that the public has the right to read, watch and hear the facts, and that journalists, writers, editors and news broadcasters should be exposed when they do not adhere to their professed ethical standards, when they cover truth with falsehood, or when they present fiction as facts to misinform and misguide readers, listeners and viewers. Media Monitors Network also believes that independent, aggressive, critical and free Press is essential to an informed democracy. Media Monitors Network fully supports freedom of the Press and strongly encourages independent and investigative journalism, which should never be compromised. Media Monitors Network advocates that structural reforms are needed to break up the dominant media conglomerates, eliminate the monopoly of exploitative media barons, establish independent public TV programs and public radio shows, and promote strong, non-profit/non-commercial alternative sources of news, information and ideas. MMN is the FIRST Media Monitoring Platform to offer you the Mobile Edition, famous Clickability, Inc 'SAVE THIS, 'PRINT THIS', 'EMAIL THIS' technologies. MMN is committed towards maximum exposure to help to prevail the whole truth. Media Monitors Network invites journalists, writers, media critics, media contributors of all kind and other professionals to join the Media Monitors Network as its directors, editors, or members. Looking forward to welcoming you to MMN...... Muhammad Ali Khan (Chief Editor & Founder MMN) |

As well as sending volunteers overseas to provide medical care to vulnerable people who are effected by natural disasters (recent hurricane in Burma), conflict (emergency response sent to Sudan) and extreme poverty (HIV/AIDS prevention amongst isolated populations in Zimbabwe)- our offices run healthcare projects in their capital cities for marginalised populations who cannot access mainstream healthcare services. Overall, MdM operates in nine European countries in this way. Our UK project is Project: London.
Médecins du Monde UK (MdM UK) was established in January 1998. Previously, British volunteers had participated in projects organised by Médecins du Monde France.MdM UK's office now concentrates its work on four major areas: Recruiting British volunteers for overseas projects run by MdM France Running Project:London which is a healthcare initiative reaching out to vulnerable people in the UK who cannot access mainstream healthcare services Raising funds for our overseas projects and for Project: London Raising awareness about MdM's campaigns, as well as raising awareness of issues concerning obstacles to healthcare that our volunteers have witnessed in the field. This is done by publishing Reports containing first-hand accounts of human rights abuses that we have witnessed which then give a voice to people whose stories would not otherwise be heard. We, a group of feminist women and men, are convinced that we need not live in a soldiers’ state. Today, Israel is capable of a determined peace politics. It need not be a militarized society. We are convinced that we ourselves, our children, our partners, need not go on being endlessly mobilized, need not go on living as warriors. We understand that the state of war in Israel is maintained by decisions made by our politicians – not by external forces to which we are passively subject. While taught to believe that the country is faced by threats beyond its control, we now realize that the words “national security” have often masked calculated decisions to choose military action for the achievement of political goals. We are no longer willing to take part in such choices. We will not go on enabling them by obediently, uncritically supplying soldiers to the military which implements them. We will not go on being mobilized, raising children for mobilization, supporting mobilized partners, brothers, fathers, while those in charge of the country go on deploying the army easily, rather than building other solutions. It is hard to express this type of opinion in Israel today. In a soldiers’ state there are equal and less equal citizens: the social ladder is topped by those who fight. And those are unfailingly men. In addition, in Israel, they are Jewish men. As warriors, they are held to have privileged knowledge, giving them precedence in decision making. Attitudes casting doubts on “security” related decisions, questioning the state’s enormous military budgets, or its ongoing policies of military confrontation, are branded “naive,” “hysterical,” “ignorant.” An attitude that dares question the fundamental principle of willing enlistment, is almost incomprehensible in a soldiers’ state. It is rejected as illegitimate.

Occupation Magazine |
The Occupation Magazine was established in October 2004 by a group of Israeli anti-occupation activists who were disturbed by the growing discrepancy between the grim reality which they observed in the Occupied Territories , and the way in which it was (and is) reported in the main stream media. The ongoing colonization policy in the Occupied Territories is being misrepresented by the Israeli and US media as "fight against terror" and a "struggle for Israel's existence / security". This is while in reality, the colonization policies promote terror, and endanger the future of both nations in this country. The aim of this website is to provide information and commentary on the ongoing developments in the Occupied Territories in Hebrew and English. The Editors of the Occupation Magazine represent a range of opinions as to the optimal solution for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. However, we are united in the belief that a viable solution must be based on the unconditional end to the Israeli military occupation, and on principles of equality, justice and mutual respect. The website is updated daily with material selected by one of the volunteer Editors. The material includes articles selected from the Israeli, Palestinian and international media which we consider informative, as well as observations on the ground by us and by fellow activists, and reports by anti-occupation and human rights organizations. While every effort is made to supply reliable information, we do not have the means to verify every fact reported in the articles. On the other hand each of us makes an effort to keep oneself informed on the Occupation by observations on the ground, interactions with Palestinians and with fellow activists, and by reading. The Editors select commentary which they consider to be of interest to the readers, but do not necessarily agree with the contents nor are responsible for the ideas expressed in them (unless the commentary is written by the Editor herself/himself). All the articles are stored in the archive and can be accessed via the "Search" facility, or via accessing the respective sections. The website is designed to serve as a resource for students, scholars, journalists, and other people looking for information on the Occupation. A sister website www.perspektiva.co.il provides information in the Russian language. We are often asked by readers what do we mean by "Occupied Territories". In our view, Occupied Territories include all the land beyond the 1967 border, which was occupied by Israel during the Six Day War - the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, the Gaza Strip, and the Golan Heights. The website focuses mostly on the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, because currently most of the violence takes place there. It is noted that the Gaza Strip did not cease to be occupied land as a result of Sharon's "disengagement", only the form of the Occupation changed. The Gaza Strip became a vast prison, cordoned off from the rest of the world by the Israeli army. The army continues the policy of gradual but relentless destruction of the Gaza Strip, which started in the beginning of the Al-Aqsa Intifada. It began well before the Qassam rockets on Sderot. Instead of security, it brought violence. Additional related material which can be found in this website pertains to racist policies of the State of Israel towards its Arab citizens, such as destruction of Bedouin homes and fields in the Negev, discriminatory housing policies within the Green Line, and persecution of public figures. Activism board provides information on how you can join the struggle against the Occupation. | http://www.kibush.co.il/index.asp

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) French: Le Bureau de la coordination des affaires humanitaires, is a United Nations body formed in December 1991 by General Assembly Resolution 46/182.[1] The resolution was designed to strengthen the UN's response to complex emergencies and natural disasters by creating the Department of Humanitarian Affairs (DHA), and replacing the Office of the United Nations Disaster Relief Coordinator, which had been formed in 1972. The OCHA was therefore the result of a 1998 reorganisation of the DHA and was designed to be the UN focal point on major disasters. Operation Dove |
We are people committed to nonviolence and to finding nonviolent solutions to conflicts and war. Some of us dedicate our whole life to the realisation of this dream; some give a medium/long term availability while some others join our activities and actions occasionally or for short periods of time, e.g. in participating to specific campaigns, public demonstrations and actions of popular mobilisation. Our organisation is simple and essential, so that we are ready to move promptly into different situations of conflict and war. Locally, we are organised into support groups called ‘quilombos’ – the name of Brazilian resistance groups who fought against their slavery. Through these ‘quilombos’ we raise awareness about our activities, organise peace education and initiatives and collect funds. We also try to make ourselves, and nonviolence, known to institutions, churches and local groups. The White Helmets (conscientious objectors to military service, who are serving civil service instead), according to Italian law no 230/1998 art.9, can take part in the humanitarian and peace actions of ‘Operation Dove’. The activities and projects of the Operation Dove are for believers and non-believers, united to build a more just society. |

Palestine Monitor |
The Palestine Monitor was set up in December 2000, just a few months after the start of the second Intifada. Palestinian writers, commentators and activists had quickly realized that though there was mass international media coverage of the Intifada itself, Palestinian narratives were largely missing from mainstream media reportage, and Palestinian voices were still rarely being heard in situ. The intifada had erupted from the continuing military occupation of Palestine by Israel: yet dominant international media narratives were still largely excluding Palestinians from commentary and debate on both its impact and consequences. In November 2000 an informal network of writers and political activists carried out a rapid analysis of mainstream international media coverage, which highlighted that an alternative narrative was needed from inside occupied Palestine. There was an urgent need for Palestinians to be able to present their own narratives in situ, directly to international audiences. This would allow them to tell their side of the story, and to challenge perceptions of and opinion about the Intifada, and the illegal occupation of their land. It would obviously need to be internet based, in order to convey information, analysis and eye witness accounts as fast as possible. This information and analysis based website would be witness to the scale of human rights abuses being carried out by the Israeli Government, and military, across the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem. It would present another powerful onus for a peace settlement based on justice, equality and internationally recognized human rights for Palestinians. We launched the ’Palestine Monitor’ information clearing house just a few weeks later, at the end of 2000. For the last seven years the Palestine Monitor (or PalMon for short) has been recognized as a dynamic and independent voice of Palestinians living under occupation. Alongside rigorously researched news and updates, information, fact sheets and regular political analysis, we also publish first hand eye-witness accounts of life in these occupied territories. These are the voices of ordinary Palestinians surviving under extraordinary circumstances. We are a small and dedicated team based in Ramallah. We travel throughout Palestine researching the evolving humanitarian, political and human rights situation, collecting testimonies directly from Palestinians, and witnessing for ourselves the brutal economic impact of the occupation of Palestine by Israel. We monitor deaths and injuries of Palestinians by the Israeli military, plus detentions, torture, freedom of movement, poverty, access to health care and water, land confiscation and other vital issues. Our aim is transparent: to present the occupation of Palestine from a Palestinian perspective, and to highlight that a credible lasting peace settlement is only possible with full scale democracy, equality for Palestinians, and internationally recognized human rights that are clearly implemented and adhered to across Israel and Palestine. We support the aims and objectives of the Palestinian National Initiative. However, we do not receive funding from any government or political movement, and value our independence. We also value your feedback, letters of support and donations. Please contact us with any constructive comments, or if you would like to be added to our email list. Palestine Online Store |
Palestine Online Store, launched in December, 2003, is an activist project striving to make Palestine-related materials more widely available. While the focus is on informational resources, other products such as apparel, handcrafts, and solidarity items are also featured. Informational/educational resources, such as books and documentary films, are extremely powerful in raising awareness about the situation in Occupied Palestine. We are glad to have a wide selection of both films and books, which will continue to increase as we grow, and we encourage you to consider using some of the films to lend out to your friends and neighbors, helping educate them about the Palestinian issue. We thank you for shopping here - your purchases and support are vital in helping educate more of the Western public about the injustices that continue to be committed against the Palestinian people. Palestine Remembered |
Purpose To emphasize that the CORE issues of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict are the DISPOSSESSION and ETHNIC CLEANSING (compulsory population transfer to achieve political gains) of the Palestinian people for the past six decades. In our opinion, the conflict would have been at the same level of intensity even if both parties had been Jewish, Muslims, or Christians. To create an easy medium where refugees can communicate, organize, and share their experiences amongst themselves. The refugees are encouraged to attach their stories, memories, pictures, movies, music files, join discussions at the message board and guest book sections, directory service listing of the refugees and their contact information, and URL links related to each listed town. To provide a comprehensive source of information about the villages and cities that were ethnically cleansed, looted, and destroyed by the Israeli army. At each town's homepage, you will find pictures (both before and after 1948), the current status of the town, the Israeli colonies that occupy the town's lands, a brief history of the town before and after Nakba, detailed accounts of atrocities and any acts of terror, personal accounts from the refugees themselves, and above all live interviews from refugees reciting their experiences before, during and after al-Nakba. To preserve the memories and the experiences of the Palestinian people around the world, especially the 726,000 Palestinians refugees who were ethnically cleansed from their homes, farms, and businesses as a result of the 1948 war. Currently, the dispossessed refugees number 6.5 million and constitute the great majority of the Palestinian people. On the political front, so far their voices have gone unheard, and we at PalestineRemembered.com hope to amplify their voices in cyberspace. To increase refugees' awareness of their rights to return to their homes, farms, and businesses based on United Nations General Assembly resolution 194. Based on this resolution, every single refugee has the right to go back to his or her home, and to be compensated for any loss of their properties, pain, and suffering. To respond to the widely popular Zionist myth that: "Palestine was a country with no people for people with no country", at length we have responded to this myth. With the help of our online community (made up of tens of thousands of refugees), visitors to the site can verify how Palestine has its people who are rich with history, culture and values. To reach out to Israelis so they can feel the human behind this "Palestinian" or "the enemy", who was forced out from his home, farm, and business to make way to persecuted European Jewish refugees. We are proud to be one of the few mediums where Israelis and Palestinians can reach out to each other and meet, of course other than at the humiliating checkpoints. It should be noted, that the majority of the site's page views comes from Israel, and many of the pictures and films that we have of the destroyed villages were shared by Israelis. We understand that many Israelis and Jews around the world support the Palestinian struggle for justice and are willing to do their part in bringing an end to the wrongs of the past. To send clear and an unambiguous message to all the Westerners that the Palestinian people cannot be crossed for what they have sinned against their Jewish citizens. Palestine and its people cannot be the saviors for their tortured conscious and souls for what they have done to the Jews who used to call Europe home. Their blind support to the "Jewish state" and its racists policies is blindly guided with their guilty conscious. Locking Jews, Palestinians and Arabs into eternal struggle will neither bring peace to the Middle East nor to the whole world. |

Palestine Telegraph |
The Palestine Telegraph: Mission Statement For a long time, the Palestinian cause has been forgotten by mainstream media outlets. The International Media that does cover Palestinian news does it through a one-sided perspective, favoring Israel. These media channels and agencies show relentless biases for Israel via the words and failing to report on the entire story. That is, more often than not, only one perspective--an Israeli one--is shown to the overwhelming majority of the viewing audience. The most recent example of this is the assault on Gaza that erupted on December 27, 2008 and ended on January 17, 2009. It killed 1,412 human beings and injured countless others. The majority were women and children. Mainstream media outlets presented a distorted and biased view of the actual facts on the ground during the war. In particular, mainstream media attempted to manipulate the facts to portray the Palestinians as the one who started the war. However, the footages, features and photos done by Gazans helped to provide a balance. The war and its portrayal by mainstream media led a group of Palestinian and International Journalists to found The Palestine Telegraph, a Palestinian-independent, online newspaper, led by Gazan Journalist Sameh A. PCATI |
The Public Committee Against Torture in Israel (PCATI) believes that torture and ill treatment of any kind and under all circumstances is incompatible with the moral values of democracy and the rule of law. PCATI advocates for all persons - Israelis, Palestinians, labor immigrants and other foreigners in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT) – in order to protect them from torture and ill treatment by the Israeli interrogation and law enforcement authorities. These include the Israel Police, the General Security Service (GSS), the Israel Prison Service and the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). PCATI acts in accordance with moral and democratic values, and the standards set in Israeli and International law. PCATI was founded in 1990 in reaction to the ongoing policy of the Israeli government, which permitted the systematic use of torture and ill treatment in GSS interrogations. In September 1999, following petitions filed by PCATI and other human rights organizations (the Association for Civil Rights, Hamoked-the Center for the Defense of the Individual), the High Court of Justice ruled to prohibit some of the methods of torture and ill treatment that had been employed until this time.. Although the ruling significantly improved the situation that existed at the time, it left an opening for the use of torture and ill treatment in Israel (the "necessity defense/ticking bomb" scenario). |

Gaza conflict Outraged by the escalating human cost of the conflict between Israel and Hamas in January this year, 183,380 people texted the word ‘ceasefire’ to support our Enough is Enough campaign. This response took place in the space of less than a week — that’s a text every second. The crisis endangered the lives of nearly every child in Gaza, and the lives of Israeli children in areas subject to attacks. Lack of food, water and supplies still exacerbates threats to children’s health and wellbeing in Gaza. We're reaching more than 180,000 people in Gaza, including more than 100,000 children. Read blogs written by our staff in Gaza. What we're doing
What you can do We're on the ground in Gaza, working flat out to help children and their families. Socialist Worker Online |
The Socialist Worker published in the UK, claims to be the most widely read socialist newspaper in the United Kingdom, although this claim is also made by the Morning Star, which has a daily circulation of 14,000. Although Socialist Worker sales/circulation data is not publicly available, John Molyneux estimates the circulation of the paper is currently under 8,000.[2] The Socialist Worker being sold on Briggate in Leeds Originally Industrial Worker, and then Labour Worker, it was founded by the Socialist Review Group (which became the International Socialists, then the SWP) in 1961 in London (Cliff 78). The newspaper was renamed Socialist Worker in 1968 and moved to weekly production; its first editor was Roger Protz (Higgins 90). Its language and general approach was modelled on the The Daily Mirror but aimed to provide a very different set of ideas (Harman 40). Writers included Paul Foot, Duncan Hallas and Eamonn McCann plus reports of strikes and other struggles from across the country sent in by readers. The editor from 1974 to 1978 Paul Foot (Foot xii) later went to work for the Mirror, though he continued to contribute to Socialist Worker until his death in 2004. It was edited for many years by Chris Harman. Working for the newspaper has proved to be an effective apprenticeship for many prominent journalists at the onset of their careers, including Gary Bushell[3]. Old format, headline after 2001 terrorist attacks Since 2004 it has been edited by Chris Bambery who has aimed to move it towards a style more like that of il manifesto, an Italian socialist/communist newspaper. The paper is printed early on Wednesday morning, then delivered to key parts of the country, where people in the region collect the paper and sell it. It also has a subscription service by which the paper is delivered on the Thursday by mail. It is also distributed to some shops through the WHSmith News distribution network. It is sent free to any UK prisoners that request it? It is published online for free. The paper is often sold by street campaigners and picketers as well as conventionally in newsagents. | http://www.socialistworker.co.uk/

Stop $30 Billion to Israel |
The Coalition to Stop $30 Billion to Israel advocates an end to the ten year commitment of $30 billion in U.S. taxpayer-funded military aid pledged to Israel in 2007 by the Bush administration. o the ten year commitment of $30 billion in U.S. taxpayer-funded military aid pledged to Israel in 2007 by the Bush administration. To further our mission, we work to inform the public and our elected officials how the Israeli military misuses American-made weapons technology and violates human rights. We also shine a light on the support that New Mexico's state government, defense contractors and institutions of higher learning provide to the Israeli defense establishment. Israel’s ongoing occupation and control over Palestinian Territories – East Jerusalem, the West Bank and Gaza Strip – are illegal under international law and contribute to unceasing conflict and suffering. The Stop $30 Billion Coalition supports an end to the occupation and the establishment of justice and equality so that both sides can live in peace. |

Stop Arming Israel |
In July 2006, as Israel launched a horrendous attack on Southern Lebanon, various organisations and individual campaigners came together to launch Stop Arming Israel. The bombing and invasion of Gaza in the winter of 2008/9 has again highlighted the UK's complicity in arming Israel, both directly and through components in US-supplied weaponry. About the Campaign Stop Arming Israel was set up in July 2006 to campaign for an end the UK arms trade with Israel. The campaign is co-ordinated by: Campaign Against Arms Trade CAAT was set up in 1974 and is a broad coalition of groups and individuals working for the reduction and ultimate abolition of the international arms trade, together with progressive demilitarisation within arms-producing countries. War on Want War on Want fights poverty in developing countries in partnership and solidarity with people affected by globalisation. They campaign for workers' rights and against the root causes of global poverty, inequality and injustice. Palestine Solidarity Campaign Founded in 1982, PSC is the UK's foremost campaigning organisation dedicated to Palestinian rights. They are an independent, non-governmental and non-party political organisation with branches around the country. Stop Arming Israel was founded with the active participation of the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions (UK), the Radical Activist Network, Voices in the Wilderness and individual activists from the anti-war movement. Supporters of our call for a two-way arms embargo on Israel include the Green Party of England and Wales, the GMB Union, Pax Christi, the Bakers, Food and Allied Workers Union, London region CND, Lewes and District CND and Waltham Forest Trades Council | http://www.stoparmingisrael.org/

TROCAIRE |
We're unlike any other development charity in Ireland. Here's why. It's our partnership approach that really makes us different. When we help people, we work with them, so that they drive the entire process themselves. Solutions are not imposed on the people we help. Instead, they become the authors of their own destiny. As far as is possible, all the goods and items we need to carry out our work are purchased on the ground, meaning we feed back into the local economy and cut back on unecessary expense, such as transportation costs. We're also different because we push Irish and international governments to act on global poverty and we reach out to thousands of students every year with our development education work. |

UNHCR |
Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, The (UNHCR), a subsidiary organ of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly, created for the purpose of providing international legal protection for refugees and finding lasting solutions to their problems, which often include homelessness, sickness or other medical disorders, and mental trauma. The office was established on January 1, 1951, by a resolution of the General Assembly. Before its establishment, the identification, registration, classification, care, legal protection, repatriation, and resettlement of refugees and displaced people were the responsibility of the International Refugee Organization, a former UN specialized agency.
The UNHCR office is run by a high commissioner, elected by the General Assembly, with the aid of an executive committee. UNHCR provides protection and material assistance to refugees on a purely social, humanitarian, and nonpolitical basis. It has a global mandate, covering all refugees, with the exception of those receiving assistance from other UN agencies and of people displaced within their own country through civil wars or other disturbances. When the office was founded, it was concerned chiefly with problems of European refugees. Since the mid-1950s, however, problems have arisen in Africa, Asia, and Latin America that have led to an increasing number of refugees from these areas, in addition to Europe.
In recognition of its humanitarian activities, UNHCR was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1954 and again in 1981. It has also won numerous other international prizes. (Encarta) |

Witness in Palestine |
Like many Americans and many Jews, I grew up with a positive view of Israel as a peace-seeking democracy. Israel symbolized to me the one protection that Jews had against the type of persecution that had plagued families like mine throughout history. I saw the Jewish state as a tiny and victimized country that simply wanted to live in peace but couldn’t because of its aggressive, Jew-hating Arab neighbors. In 2003, during a backpacking trip through the Middle East, I began to meet Palestinian refugees from 1948. I didn’t know who the Palestinians were, or where Palestine was, and through my new acquaintances I began to hear a narrative about the history and present of Israel/Palestine that was entirely different from the one I had learned growing up in the United States. My first reaction was disbelief, and anger. Families told me stories of past and present military attacks, house demolitions, land confiscation, imprisonment without trial, and torture. It seemed that these actions were not carried out for the protection of Jewish people, but rather for the creation and expansion of a Jewish state at the expense of the rights, lives, and dignity of the non-Jewish people living in the region. It was hard for me to believe that Israel could act so unjustly. Not believing what I heard, I decided to do some research to prove myself right. Immediately, I was shocked to find how much I didn’t know about the situation on the ground. Not knowing who or what to believe anymore, I decided to go to see the situation with my own eyes. Since I returned, I’ve dedicated my life to informing fellow Americans and others about what I found, and what they can do to support a just peace for all peoples in Israel/Palestine. |

An important focus is challenging the militarist policies of our own governments. We are not an organisation, but a means of communicating and a formula for action | http://www.womeninblack.org.uk

ISRAEL - Jerusalem |

Yesh Gvul |
Yesh Gvul (“There is a limit !”) is an Israeli peace group campaigning against the occupation by backing soldiers who refuse duties of a repressive or aggressive nature. The brutal role of the Israeli army in subjugating the Palestinian population places numerous servicemen in a grave moral and political dilemma, as they are required to enforce policies they deem illegal, immoral and ultimately harmful to Israeli interests. The army hierarchy demands compliance, but many soldiers, whether conscripts or reservists, find that they cannot in good conscience obey the orders of their superiors. Yesh Gvul arose in response to the 1982 Israeli invasion of Lebanon, as growing numbers of soldiers grasped that the campaign, with its bloodshed and havoc, was an act of naked and futile aggression in which they wanted no part. 168 servicemen were jailed, some repeatedly, for refusing to serve in the campaign: the actual number of refusals was far greater, but their rising numbers deterred the army from prosecuting most of the refuseniks. The first Palestinian intifada in 1987 likewise prompted further refusals, with close on 200 jailed, though the army again backed down from jailing many of the recalcitrant soldiers, indicating that refusals were significantly more numerous. A notably high ratio of refuseniks are combat officers (ranking from sergeant to major) i.e. soldiers who have served with distinction. From the outset, Yesh Gvul has fostered the refusal movement. Defying official intimidation - including close surveillance by police and security services - we counsel soldiers wrestling with the painful choice between serving policies they find abhorrent, or defying military discipline. Those who elect to refuse get our full moral and material backing, ranging from financial support for families of jailed refuseniks, to vigils at the military prisons where they were held. Whenever a refusenik is jailed, we bring his protest to the public notice, as a model for the broader peace movement, and for other soldiers in a similar dilemma. |

YNET |
Ynet is one of the most popular Israeli news websites. While it is owned and operated by Yediot Ahronot, the country's leading daily newspaper, most of the content is original work published on the website only, written by a semi-independent staff. [1][2] Originally launched in both Hebrew and Arabic versions ("Ynet" and "Arabynet"), the Arabic page ceased operations in May 2005. Currently there is also an English edition, Ynetnews. Ynet's main competition is Walla! and NRG, operated by its competitor in print, the daily Maariv. According to Alexa Internet traffic rankings Ynet is among the top 1000 websites in the world and in top 10 sites in Israel.[3] |

Zochrot "Remembering" |
Zochrot ["Remembering"] is a group of Israeli citizens working to raise awareness of the Nakba, the Palestinian catastrophe of 1948. The Zionist collective memory exists in both our cultural and physical landscape, yet the heavy price paid by the Palestinians -- in lives, in the destruction of hundreds of villages, and in the continuing plight of the Palestinian refugees -- receives little public recognition. Zochrot works to make the history of the Nakba accessible to the Israeli public so as to engage Jews and Palestinians in an open recounting of our painful common history. We hope that by bringing the Nakba into Hebrew, the language spoken by the Jewish majority in Israel, we can make a qualitative change in the political discourse of this region. Acknowledging the past is the first step in taking responsibility for its consequences. This must include equal rights for all the peoples of this land, including the right of Palestinians to return to their homes. |

Amos Trust

Amos Trust promoting human rights and
nurturing local responses to situations of injustice
Promoting justice
Established
around the work of Garth Hewitt in 1985, Amos Trust promotes justice and hope
for forgotten communities. Amos works with a network of community projects from around
the world to raise awareness of, and provide support to responses that
address the route causes of injustice and poverty. As we have made links with
partners across the developing world, we have learnt from them, been inspired
by them and have tried to respond practically by providing the support they
need.
Our close and long-standing
relationship with our partners allows us to have an in depth understanding of
the issues they face and of the numerous barriers they have to overcome to
provide hope for their communities. Their experiences, knowledge and
understanding has created a theology and spirituality which underpins all our
work and is caught in the music, writing and resources produced by Amos
Trust.
Amos works with a wide cross
section of organizations and individuals in the UK, playing a key role in
raising awareness of the issues, developing campaigns and in lobbying for
change.
Providing hope
We seek to provide our partner
projects with the practical and financial support they need. Together they
form a global network of highly innovative community projects. These projects
include work with street children in South Africa, promotion of human rights and
sustainable communities for Dalits in rural India, community development and
education provision in Nicaragua and working toward peace and reconciliation
in Palestine and Israel.
Making connections
We aim to be friendly, flexible and
creative with a commitment to relationships being at the heart of our work.
We are committed to increasing links between our supporters and our partners,
arranging regular supporter visits to partner projects and bringing our
partners over for speaking engagements in the UK.
It is the fund raising,
commitment and prayers of Amos supporters that makes our activities possible.
We hope that we provide our supporters with a practical way of getting
involved and together witness to the love, justice and compassion of God.

Arabist (The)
|
The Arabist is dedicated to
covering the politics and culture of the Arab world. It is published and
maintained in Cairo, with contributions from journalists and researchers
working in the region.
Originally launched in December
2003, The Arabist is centered on Egypt but also aims to cover other areas of
the Arab world–most notably the Levant and the Maghreb. While focused on
political issues, it aspires to highlight important cultural trends in the
Arab world. What it is not–by far–is authoritative or exhaustive. It merely
reflects the interests and the expertise of its contributors.
It has become commonplace in
the mainstream press to criticize US (and other) foreign policy veterans with
deep knowledge of Arab politics, culture and language as “State Department
Arabists.” The implication is that anyone who takes such interest in the
region is inherently suspicious and must have “gone native.” This is taking
place at a time when interest in the Arab world should be encouraged rather
than discouraged. The term “arabist” is also confused with “pan-Arabism” and
similar nationalist ideologies that exist in the Arab world. The
interpretation of the word “arabist” as someone biased towards Arabs or who
espouses Arab nationalism has unfortunately begun to make it into
contemporary dictionaries as its usage as a derogatory term has spread.
There is also a tendency to
confuse the terms “arabist” and “orientalist”–with the latter word carrying
the negative connotation it has been given by the scholarship of Edward Said
on (mis)representations of the Arab world in European literature and arts.
Suffice it to say that this site seeks the very opposite of romanticizing the
Arab world or trying to explain it through essentialist cultural theories.
Debunking ill-informed, culturalist or alarmist works about the region is one
of the main preoccupations of this site.
This site proudly defends the
term “arabist” and proposes its own definition, one that could be applied to
great Western scholars of the Arab world such as Maxime Rodinson just as well
as it could to Arab thinkers such as Ibn Khaldoun, the inventor of sociology
and the first great theorist of Arab political systems:
Arabist |ˈarəbist|
|ˌɛrəbəst| |ˌarəbɪst|noun
a person who studies Arabic
civilization or language.
